The Room Gets Quieter the Higher You Climb

Here's something nobody put in the pitch deck: the higher you climb, the fewer people you can actually tell the truth to.

You can't fully let your team see it. They're looking to you to be steady. You can't dump it on your investors. They're evaluating you. And at some point, bringing it home to your partner stops being a conversation and starts being the weather.

So you learn to carry it alone. You get good at it, even. You walk into the room, run the meeting, close the deal, and nobody watching would ever guess how loud it is in your head on the drive home.

That's not a character flaw. It's the job.

Indra Nooyi ran PepsiCo and said the same thing out loud. She couldn't confide in her spouse, her board, or her people, because each one was the wrong audience for a different reason. If it's isolating at the top of a Fortune 500, of course it's isolating at the top of the thing you built from nothing.

Most founders report real anxiety, burnout, or depression. And the vast majority never say a word about it to anyone. Not because they're weak. Because they think they're the only one. You're not the only one.

The part most people miss

The problem was never only that you have no one to talk to. It's that somewhere along the way, who you are and what you built became the same thing.

When revenue is up, you're up. When a deal dies or a good person quits, it doesn't just feel like a bad week. It feels like a verdict on you. The business becomes the scoreboard for your worth as a human being, and a scoreboard that never stops moving is a brutal place to hang your identity.

One small shift

You don't fix this by grinding harder or by finally arriving. You fix it by separating the two things that got fused. When the next hit lands, catch the thought before it becomes a verdict and ask one question: is this a fact about my business, or a story about me?

A fact about your business is workable. You can plan around it. A story about you (I'm behind, I'm a fraud, I should have this figured out by now) is just fear wearing your voice. Name it, and it loosens its grip.

You were never meant to carry this in a sealed room. That's not strength. It's just isolation with good posture.

If this resonated, let’s talk.
